# Modes of Play Shadowdark RPG is a fantasy adventure game where players delve into buried ruins, lost cities, spider-infested forests, and even fearsome dragon lairs in search of gold and glory. The Shadowdark is any place where danger and darkness hold sway. It clutches ancient secrets and dusty treasures in its rotting claws, daring fortune seekers to tempt their fates. The Core rulebooks has optional roles to create different challenges and gameplay styles. For my games, I run a modified Hero Mode, which blends Hack, Hunter, Momentum, and Pulp modes. ## Hero Mode ##### NEW CHARACTER CREATION METHOD Use the core rules to create your 1st level character (PC), with a few modified changes: - Roll 2d6+6 - Arrange stats in any order. - Choose your background. - Gain one use of the Hand of Fate. ##### HAND OF FATE With the hand of fate, your PC may re-roll any one stat, class feature, or starting gold, during character creation. You can use this feature only once. If the re-roll removes your only stat score of 14 or higher, you may start over and regain one use of the Hand of Fate. ##### HIT POINTS Maximum hit points at level 1 and 2. Roll after level 3. ##### CHARACTER TALENTS Characters gain talents at levels 1-3, then every odd level thereafter. ##### HERO TALENTS At even levels (2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th levels), you gain a Hero Talent. Each time you gain a hero talent, choose from one of the following features: - +1 to any one stat. - Gain the ability to wield one new weapon. Any extra weapon die of damage dealt by this type of weapon has its damage halved, round down. - Gain the ability to wield one new armor. You cannot calculate your AC from more than one source, unless a spell states otherwise. - Maximize the roll you make for one of your hit points die this level.
